BLOB #5

BLOB #5 post thumbnail image

This BLOB starts out in a 1-4 high set with the guards on the wing and the post players at the elbow. This setup is used quite frequently so having multiple plays starting in the setup can keep the defense off balance and unable to stop the play because of the various plays your team may have. I like having 3 or 4 plays that are all different but start in the same setup to keep defenses from knowing what play we are running.

The movement is designed to make the defense think it is a play for the guards and to get every defender away from the basket. The guards are coming to the same side to help clear out the back side defense. Then the post players are screening for each other to get a post player cutting to the basket without any help side defense.

The ballside guard, point(1) in the diagram, cuts down to the corner. The guard(2) comes across the floor getting a double screen by the two players at the elbows. The entry pass is made straight to the guard(2) on the wing.

It is very important the forward(3) clears out fast and quick to the backside. Their defender can mess up the second action of the play more then any other defender. If the forward(3) can clear out to the backside and have their defender take off with them then that leaves the basket area empty with no defense on the helpside area of the floor.

As the guard(2) catches the entry pass, the big(4) continues to move across the lane as much as possible to set a 2nd screen on the center(5). The farther across the lane the big(4) can get before the screen, the more space the center(5) has to cut and get a pass from the guard(2).

If the pass from the guard(2) can not be made straight to the center(5), then the guard(2) can pass down to the point(1) in the corner and the post entry pass can be made from there. This is creating a 3-man triangle with the center(5) and two guards on the wing and corner. The center(5) can score in the post or have kick out 3-pointers to the corner and wing.

This is a quick BLOB play to get hopefully a layup first but a kick out 3 if the defense collapses on the post. Even with it being a quick play, all 5 offensive players are moving and possibly involved with the play. The ball could touch 4 of the 5 players’ hands if the post entry has to come from the corner. This makes it difficult for the defense. Every defensive player is having to maintain complete focus or the offense can get an open shot.
