BLOB #33-Corner Double Curl

Most BLOB plays are drawn up where the ball is being entered on the lane line or somewhere close to the lane line. The problem with having all your BLOB plays setup in this way is when the ball goes out of bounds in the corner. When the ball is in the corner then the normal screens and cuts of a BLOB play are far less effective. A lot of teams are stuck when the ball is in the deep corner. This BLOB is designed with this mind.

BLOB plays are a great chance to score points. But when the ball is moved from the lane line to the corner, most BLOB plays are not going to work. I have been in games where this occurrence has not been planned for and the players are unsure of what to do. Coaches have to scrambled at times when this happens just to get the players organized to get the ball in play. Those times have made me reassess what I need to do as a coach to make my players feel comfortable when the corner entry pass is needed.

This BLOB play takes a time in a game where the team could be disorganized and makes it a chance to catch the defense unaware because they are also having to defend in an unknown situation. The defense has to shift just as much as the offense does. By having a BLOB play ready to go, the offense has a chance to attack the defense in an unfamiliar situation. The teams that are ready for this situation can get an easy basket that could be the difference in a close game.

With the ball in the corner it changes all cuts and screens because of where the pass is coming from. So, the setup is to adjust all players with this is mind. The screening needs to be set in ways to get players open either going towards the corner or cutting from the sideline towards the basket.

The four players are setup in a diagonal using the corner as the focal point. The point(1) is first in line. The big(4) and center(5) are next with the guard(2) last in line. On the start the point(1) is cutting to the basket. If the defense moves out with the offense then this quick cut might be open.

As the point(1) clears to the basket, the big(4) and center(5) and turning and setting a stagger screen for the guard(2).

As the guard(2) comes around the stagger screen, they are cutting to the basket. The point(1) has cleared to the basket and will start to move back up the lane. The guard(2) is curling around the stagger screen. If the guard’s(2) defender jumps to the corner then the curl cut could be open for the entry pass and a layup.

If the curl cut by the guard(2) is not open, then the point(1) is coming back around after their initial basket cut. The center(5) steps down with the big(4) stepping up behind the center(5) to get a good angle for a 2nd stagger screen. The point(1) is coming around the stagger screen to the wing for the entry pass and possible shot.

This corner BLOB is a great play as a last second play to get a shot off but it also works to just get the ball in bounds. There are a couple of different scoring options with the point(1) coming around the stagger screen at the end to get a possible 3-point shot to end the play.

If the offense can not get a shot off of the play then at least the ball is entered to the point(1) where they have the chance for the big(4) to set a ball screen or if nothing else the point(1) can retreat with the ball back to the top and reset the offense.

When the ball goes out of bounds in the corner, the offense can have options to get a shot from the BLOB play. This BLOB may not be used very often but when the corner is where the entry pass is coming from it is always good to have something planned and practiced so the players have an understanding of what to do. This situation can have the offense unprepared. This BLOB play can remove that uncertainty and give the offense confidence on what to do to and prevent a turnover from occurring because the players are not ready for this situation.

It is always better to be prepared for a scenario and never have it happen rather than being unprepared for a situation and have it come up in a game. This BLOB play takes a rare occurrence and gives the offense a chance to still get a shot by being ready for it to happen.
