What is Man to Man Defense?
Man-to-Man or just Man Defense is when every player on defense is guarding a player on offense. Each player has an offensive player they are responsible for guarding and defending.
Man defense can be aggressive in trying to get out into passing lanes and make it hard for the offense to pass the ball. It can also be passive where each defender is playing off their man and standing in driving lanes. It is very versatile in how it can be played. It is the most used defense at the college and professional levels.
Man defense has 3 different concepts to learn to effectively run a man defense. These are
Each player must learn all three positions for man defense to work.
What is a Triangle-2 Defense?
A Triangle-2 Defense is a combination defense using both man-to-man defense as well as zone defense. Two defensive players are going to be playing man-to-man defense while the other 3 defensive players will be playing in a zone defense usually in a triangle or inverted triangle formation.
Two defensive players will be guarding the opponent’s best two offensive players while the other 3 play in a zone formation. This formation is usually one defender at the high post and the other 2 players on the blocks. This can be inverted with a player on each elbow and one player at the front of the rim but the inverted look is rare.
The triangle-2 defense is a specialty defense in that it is not used very often by most teams if at all. A triangle-2 defense is normally used with a lesser talented team playing a team with two very good offensive players and 3 below average offensive players. The triangle-2 gives the defense the ability to focus their attention on the 2 main players of the offense while maintaining some rim protection with the other 3 defenders. This makes it harder for the opponent to drive straight into the basket for easy layups.
Best Team Personnel for Man to Man Defense
I am a bit of a stubborn coach. My players know that we are going to play man to man defense most of the time. I do not think there is certain personnel a team needs to have in order to play man-to-man defense. As long as the defense can match up and guard the offense then a team can run man-to-man defense.
For me, this means sometimes my center was guarding the other team’s point guard. The point guard was not going to score so it did not matter how well the center could guard the point guard. I will be creative in my matchups to give our defense the best possible chance of defending the offense.
In a perfect world, the defensive players will be the same height or taller than the offensive players. The defensive players will have a speed and quickness advantage over the offense. And the one trait that can separate a good defensive player from a great player is quick hands. A defender with quick hands will get steals or deflections at a much higher rate than a defender with slow hands.
The last two things a good man-to-man defense will have is good positioning which can be taught and good instincts which cannot be taught. Good positioning is the players being in the right spots at the right time. Good positioning can be drilled in practice, so the players know exactly where to be at all times on defense.
Good instincts are when a player knows where and when to take an extra step so they can get a deflection or steal. This cannot be taught. Players will either have good instincts or they won’t. And if they don’t then they will never get them. Good instincts are just something each player naturally has.
Best Team Personnel for a Triangle-2 Defense
The best team personnel for a triangle-2 defense is having two really good defensive players. These two players are going to be denying and chasing the other team’s best players all game trying to stop them from scoring. If the defenders can not stop them from scoring with the help of the 3 zone players, then the triangle-2 defense will not work.
The two players guarding man to man should be in great shape due to the amount of effort needed to deny an offensive player the ball. They should be quick to help stay in a denial position as the offensive players are going to be working to get open. And finally, they should be great on the ball defenders. If the offensive player can catch the ball, then the defender needs to make it very hard for the player to still score the ball.
The reason for denying the two offensive players is two-fold. First the offensive player may wear themselves out by having to work hard to get the ball. Once they get the ball, they still have to put even more effort into scoring the ball. Over the course of a full game this may tire them out so they are not as good late in the game as they normally would be.
Secondly, the other 3 offensive players might struggle passing the two best players the ball forcing the other 3 players to have to dribble more and possible shoot more. If a defense is able to get the worse offensive players more involved, then the defense has a better chance of reducing the offenses ability to score points which gives the defense a better chance of winning the game.
When to Use a Man to Man Defense?
Man-to-man Defense can be used at any and all times. I have gone an entire season coaching having used nothing but man-to-man except for 1 possession. That 1 possession of zone ended with the opponent making a 3-pointer. That was the end of zone defense for that season.
Man defense can be passive or aggressive. It can help guard against dribble drives by being passive. It can try and make passing for the offense hard by being aggressive in the passing lanes. Defenses can decide how they want to guard ball screens. So, there are no situations where man defense is unable to be used.
However, it is more about when not to use man-to-man defense rather than knowing when to use it. If the five defenders are unable to guard the 5 offensive players, then man defense might not be the best defense to use. Knowing when to change is really about determining if each defender can guard their matchup one on one. If the defense cannot guard the offense one-on-one, then the defense will constantly be rotating to help. If the defense is rotating to help, then the offense can attack and pass and get wide open shots on offense. When this happens, the defense needs to change matchups or switch to a zone defense.
When to Use a Triangle-2 Defense?
The Triangle-2 Defense is best when the opposing team has two good offensive players and 3 mediocre to bad offensive players. This gives the defense the ability to focus and help on those two players. This makes sure the two best players are always being guarded. And the 3 zone players are always going to be in a position to help or trap those two players.
This defense is something that a team has to have scouted their opponent beforehand and work on in practice leading up to the game. This is not a defense that can be used without working on it in practice beforehand. The 3 zone players must be able to communicate with each to know who is going to guard the ball when it is not in one the best player’s hands. Rotations in a triangle-2 defense are not complicated but it does take some time for players to understand how the 3-man zone moves together.
Advantages of a Man to Man Defense Over a Triangle-2 Defense
1) Better Ball Pressure
Man to Man Defense when played correctly can put constant pressure on the ball. All 5 defenders are able to stay with 1 offensive player and guard them with pressure when they have the ball. The 4 off ball defenders are defending either one pass away or in help side defense.
Depending on the team’s defensive philosophy, mainly whether the team plays more up into the passing lanes or in gap positions, Man to Man Defense can be adjusted to how the team is able to defend without giving up easy shots and baskets. Every offensive player is accounted for and should have a defender in close proximity to them. This presents a constant pressure that can be hard for offenses to play against.
A Triangle-2 Defense guards 2 players in a Man to Man Defense while the other 3 defenders are playing in a zone. The 3 zone defenders are guarding an area but are not guarding the other 3 offensive players. Those 3 players are free to move as they wish without having a defender close to them. And even when they have the ball, the defense could defend them very loosely giving them a lot of space.
Essentially, a Triangle-2 is able to try and put more ball pressure on 2 offensive players while have little to no ball pressure on the other 3. Man to Man Defense on the other hand puts constant ball pressure on every offensive player without putting more focus on any one player.
2) Less Likely to Give Up Any Open Shots
Man to Man Defense should have one defender guarding one offensive player. This 1 to 1 matchup should prevent the offense from getting open. Each offensive player should have a defensive player close to them so the offensive player should never get into open space to get a shot.
The offense will do things to get open like set ball screens. The defense will work on guarding things like ball screens and off screens to prevent the offense from getting open. This could be helping and recovering or even switching on screens. No matter how the defense chooses to defend these actions, the defense should keep the 1 to 1 matchup for every offensive player.
A good Man to Man Defense will have each defender stay connected to 1 offensive player. So, the offense can try to get space but a well executed defense will stop the offense from getting that space. Without gaining space away from the defense, the offense is never going to give up open shots.
A Triangle-2 Defense loosely guards 3 offensive players. The goal is to stop the main 2 offensive players from shooting and scoring. These leaves the other 3 offensive players free to move and play. Because of this, the Triangle-2 Defense will allow the 3 offensive players to get open shots so the 2 main offensive players do not get to shoot.
A Triangle-2 Defense is gambling that if they can stop the 2 main offensive players from scoring, that the other 3 offensive players will not be able to score enough to win the game. Therefore, every shot the 3 offensive players shoot, is one less shot the 2 main offensive players are going to shoot. The Triangle-2 Defense will give up open shots as long as they are being shot by the right players.
3) Can Be Used Against Every Team
Man to Man Defense is the primary defense for almost every college team. It is also a primary defense for most high school teams. That is because it can be used against every team. It does not matter who the opponent is or what they do well. Every team can matchup 1 on 1 and play Man Defense.
While it can be used against every team, some games the offense will be too good for the defense to play Man to Man Defense. This could be because of size or speed or skill. In these games, the defense will need to switch to a different defense to stay competitive. But outside of those games where the defense has a significant disadvantage, every team will be able to guard Man to Man.
The Triangle-2 Defense is a niche defense only to be used in very specific situations. The offense must have only 2 scorers and the other 3 players on offense have to be below average scorers. Any team with more than 2 scorers will just keep throwing the ball to the third scorer who is not being guarded Man to Man. They will have the freedom and space to keep getting wide open shots.
Advantages of a Triangle-2 Defense Over a Man to Man Defense
1) More Focus on Best Two Offensive Players
If a defense can hold the 2 best offensive players under their scoring average, then the defense has a great chance to win the game. The Triangle-2 Defense uses this philosophy as the fundamental concept of the defense. The Triangle-2 Defense is putting all of its focus on the 2 main offensive players to try and stop them from scoring.
Because of the focus on just 2 players, the other 3 offensive players have more freedom to move and play. As long as those 3 offensive players are not scoring a bunch, the Triangle-2 Defense should work. The 2 best offensive players are being guarded Man to Man. The Triangle-2 Defense have the other 3 defenders in a zone which allows them to double the 2 best offensive players every time they catch the ball.
The Triangle-2 Defense has all of its focus on just 2 players. When it works, it tends to work really well. When it does not work, then the offense can score a lot and quickly.
Man to Man Defense does not focus all of its attention on any one player but spreads out focus amongst all 5 offensive players. Now the defense may adjust to certain players every game but it does not put all of the focus on any one player.
Man to Man Defense can adjust to certain players. A great shooter may be in a no help situation where the defender is not allowed to help off of the shooter. A great driver of the ball may have all help defenders with a foot in the lane to help prevent them from driving. Little adjustments can be made but the overall defense is not designed to stop any 1 or 2 players from scoring.
2) Can Confuse the Offense
The Triangle-2 Defense is not seen very often. Offenses are not familiar with it nor do they know how to attack it. The unfamiliarity with the Triangle-2 Defense often leaves offenses confused and unsure on what to do.
The 2 best offensive players are being guarding Man to Man and sometimes being double teamed. That forces the ball to be passed to the other 3 offensive players who at minimum is the 3rd best offensive option. This gives the Triangle-2 Defense a chance to be successful because offensive players are having to play out of their normal playing situation. Players who are not normally handling the basketball are now being forced to do more offensively because the best 2 players are being restricted. This leads to confusion because offensive players are doing things that is not their usual role.
The other issue is 2 defenders are playing man. 3 defenders are playing zone. Does the offense play a Man to Man Offense or do they play a Zone Offense? Man to Man Offenses may not work well because of the 3 zone defenders. Zone Offenses may not work because of the 2 Man Defense defenders.
If a team has not practiced for a Triangle-2 Defense, then they may be trying to figure out how to play against during the game. The offensive players will be trying to find what works during the game instead of practice. The offense will not have many reps if any reps playing against a Triangle-2 Defense. It is hard learning a how to play offense against a defense without any practice.
Man to Man Defense does not have the ability to confuse an offense. I would say most teams have their first offense installed to be played against a Man to Man Defense. Most offenses are designed to be used against a Man Defense. Man Defense is the 1st defense taught and installed by most every team. Most practices are going to have some type of play going against a Man to Man Defense.
3) Only Needs 2 Good Defenders
The Triangle-2 Defense is built on the need to only need 2 good on the ball defenders. The other 3 defenders are playing in a zone so they could be bad man to man defenders and it does not matter. The main 2 defensive players have to be good in order to control the best 2 offensive players. The defense has to win those 2 matchups.
The other 3 defenders are not required to be great defenders. They are still guarding but they are not needed to keep up great defensive play because of the 3 man zone concept. They are still trying to defend and contest shots but at the same time they are not working all out to prevent the other 3 offensive players from shooting. The Triangle-2 Defense wants the 3 offensive players to shoot.
The 2 good defenders are having to work hard to keep the ball out of the hands of the 2 best offensive players or at least not let them shoot as much. The Triangle-2 Defense can help as well by double teaming them when they catch the ball. The Triangle-2 Defense does a great job of helping on drives if the defense is not double teaming the 2 offensive players. But the 2 main defenders need to win their matchup the majority of the time.
Man to Man Defense works better when the defenders are good but all 5 defenders must be able to handle their matchup. Man Defense struggles when the offense has the advantage in the defensive matchups. Man to Man Defense needs all 5 defenders to be able to guard well. The defenders do not have to shut down their offensive matchup but they can not just let them score every time either.
Man Defense starts with the on the ball 1v1 matchups. The defense has to be able to keep the ball in front of them without needing help. If the defense has to help all the time because a defender allows the offense to dribble around them, then the defense is chasing and rotating and leaving offensive players wide open for shots.
Offenses are going to win these 1v1 matchups at times but the defense also has to win their fair share of them. If a single defender is getting beat every possession, then the defense is always in a scramble mode and is going to lose. That is why Man to Man Defense needs to have all 5 defenders being good defenders.
Which is Better? A Man to Man Defense or a Triangle-2 Defense
Man Defense is better. There is a reason most every Division 1 College Team is playing Man to Man Defense. A well executed Man to Man Defense is very hard to beat. Every offensive player is accounted for and covered. Open shots do not happen often. The defense is able to pressure the offense into areas and situations that the offense does not want to be in.
Offenses have to try and create openings and space. This leads to ball screens and cutting. Man to Man Defense now has to have an answer for how to move through and around ball screens and cuts without losing their matchup. A good Man to Man Defense has all 5 defenders working together and moving with each other.
One defender can take a step back to give just enough space for another defender to cut through to stay with their matchup. As the 2nd defender clears the 1st defender, the 1st defender can step back into that space to stay close to their matchup.
This ability to move with each other while still not giving the offense any space or time to work makes the Man to Man Defense very hard to play against.
The Triangle-2 Defense is a nice curveball when playing against a better team. It can slow down the 2 best offensive players. It can confuse the offense. It can do enough to keep the game close so the less talented defense might have a chance to win the game. It gives an overmatched opponent a chance.
However, the Triangle-2 Defense is a niche defense only to be used a few times a year if at all. There are many reasons why a team can not use the Triangle-2 Defense. The lack of availability really hurts the Trianle-2 Defense against other defenses.
My suggestion is to install and teach a good Man to Man Defense. Man Defense should be able to be used the vast majority of the time. When confronted with a team that the Man Defense will not work against, then add in a zone to give the defense a chance to guard the offense well. But a good Man to Man Defense will be effective against most if not all opponents.
