BLOB #23-Box to Flat Set to Ball Screen Clear Out

BLOB #23-Box to Flat Set to Ball Screen Clear Out post thumbnail image

A dynamic scoring point guard is a great player to have. The problem with a scoring point guard is they are always creating their shot against a set defense. As a coach, a way to help those scoring point guards is to get them away from the ball and let a play come back to them where they are able to create against a shifting defense.

One area where the defense is already going to be changed is on a BLOB play. The defense is already changed because of the throw in. Now an offense can move in a way to get the point guard isolated against a moving defense. I am always looking for plays to give a scoring point guard easy shots especially in a BLOB situation.

This play is going to get the defense moving first. Then there is a misdirection. And before the defense can get set, the point guard has the ball and is working with a lot of open space. This play will catch defense off balance and give a point guard easy scoring chances.

The BLOB starts in a box formation but flips the normal player setup. In this play the bigs are at the elbows and the guards are on the block. So, the play is already giving the defense a different look then a standard box formation. To start, the bigs are going to release to the corners. This is going to free up the top of the court.

The point(1) is the player who will be getting the scoring opportunity. They are starting on the opposite block away from the ball. The guard(2) is going to initiate the play and is starting directly in front of the inbounds passer.

The entry pass from the forward(3) is coming over the top to the elbow or elbow extended to the guard(2). The space cleared out by the big(4) is the area where the guard(2) is making the initial catch.

Once the forward(3) passes the ball in, they are moving to the backside to free up as much space on the frontside as possible. I want as much open space as I can get on the frontside.

As the guard(2) catches the inbounds pass, they are dribbling toward the middle of the court. The center(5) is moving up to the wing to give space for the forward(3) to enter into the corner. The dribble by the guard(2) and the shifting by the center(5) and forward(3) makes it look like the play is moving to the backside of the court. This dribble and shift will occupy those defenders and not let them stand around the lane.

As the guard(2) dribbles to the middle, the point(1) is releasing to the space the guard(2) is leaving. The space opened with the dribble is the area where the point(1) is running into. As the point(1) gets to the 3-point line, the guard(2) is passing the ball back to the front court to the point(1).

On the catch, the point(1) will have the ball with just the big(4) on that side of the court. The guard(2), forward(3) and center(5) are all at the 3-point on the backside of the court.

The big(4) comes up out of the corner to set a ball screen for the point(1). All the movement and passing clears the frontside of the court to give the big(4) and point(1) the chance to run a simple 2-man game.

All of the options that can come from a 2-man game is available. The simple play is the pick and roll. The helpside defense are all on the backside having been occupied with the dribble and shift. This gives the point(1) a chance to come off of the ball screen on the baseline and have a free run at the basket.

But that is not the only option. There is a pick and pop to get the big(4) an open 3-point shot off of the ball screen.

The big(4) can slip the screen if the defense starts to overplay the ball screen. The point(1) can refuse the ball screen and attack the lane. The big(4) can step into the block and post up instead of setting the ball screen.

The options for the big(4) and point(1) are numerous and with the right players in the 2-man game it can lead to easy shoots and easy points.

Conclusion

A dynamic scoring point guard is a great player to have. But as a coach, I want to have situations where the point(1) can play off the ball because they are going to have the ball so much being the point guard. This BLOB can be used to get the ball into the point guard’s hands in a spot to attack the defense.

The beauty is the point is able to get into a scoring position without having the ball in their hands to begin with. This lets the point(1) play off the ball without having to play against a completely set defense. This play and other plays like this can give the point(1) easier chances to score without having a high work effort to get them.
