This is a nice and simple BLOB play to use with two good post players. The players start out in a 4 high set lined up across the foul line. The two post players are starting on the elbow with the two guards starting foul line extended. I always have my forward(3) take the ball out.
When the forward(3) gets the ball from the ref, the point(1) being ballside is running down into the corner. The guard(2) is running around the 3-point line as the release man should neither the two post players come open.
I have the play designed for the big(4) setting a screen for the center(5). This is a ballside to backside screen. I like the ballside to backside screen personally.
I have seen it ran with the backside post coming ballside for the screen. So, in the diagram above, the center(5) would be screening for the big(4).
I prefer ballside to backside in the hopes that the help defender will step over to the center(5) running towards the ball and leaves the backside block wide open for the big(4) to roll into.
This play will also depend on where the forward’s(3) defender is set. If they are guarding the entry pass and are right in front of the forward(3), then there is a good chance a lob pass to the center(5) will be wide open.
If the forward’s(3) defender is underneath the basket, then how they help the screen and roll will depend on who gets open. They can step ballside to help on the center(5) leaving the big(4) open on the backside block. The defender can stay underneath the basket or backside leaving a pass open to the center(5).
Another option off of this play is this. If the forward’s(3) defender stays on the backside, then the pass can be made to the center(5) to enter the ball. Then if the forward(3) steps right into the court on the baseline the center(5) can pass right back to the forward for an open 7-foot shot. The forward’s(3) defender will be stuck behind the center(5) and their defender leaving the return pass wide open.
This is an easy play to run. While very simple it can be hard to guard. It has a counter to everything the defense might do to guard it. It gives your post players a chance to get the ball in a good scoring area right off an entry pass.
