Here is a set of 4 plays using a 1-4 high set. These are simple plays that are easy for kids to learn and run. They can be run against either a 2-3 zone or man to man defense. These plays can either be installed as a group of plays or you can use just 1 or 2 of them. I hope you can gain some easy baskets using the following plays.
Play #1
The first play is best ran against a man to man defense. It is a simple post to post screen with the big(4) screening away to the center(5). The center(5) cuts to the basket and the big(4) rolls to the basket after the screen. The center(5) comes to the ballside block and the big(4) rolls to the backside block. The point(1) cuts hard to the ballside corner if the screen does not work. The guard(2) cuts out and around as the safety if nobody gets open.
Play #2
The 2nd play is a simple screen the screener play. It starts with the point(1) in-screening for the big(4). The big(4) cuts to ballside corner. After the first screen, the center(5) sets a cross screen for the point(1) to cut to the backside block. The center(5) rolls to the ballside block. Hopefully the center(5) coming ballside will occupy the defense and let the point(1) cut to the basket wide open.
Play #3
The 3rd play is design to get a wide open 3-point shot. The point(1) cuts to the corner for the entry pass. The big(4) pops out. The point(1) passes up to the big(4). As this is going on the guard(2) cuts to the backside block to setup the downscreen. The center(5) sets a downscreen for the guard(2). The big(4) passes over to the guard(2) for a 3 point shot. This can be used against both man and zone.
Play #4
The last play starts with the point(1) cutting to the corner. The guard(2) cuts across the floor using a double screen by the big(4) and center(5). The entry can be passed to either the point(1) or the guard(2). If the entry pass comes into the point(1) they will make a 2nd pass up to the guard(2). The ball needs to get into the hands of the guard(2) before the 2nd part of the play.
Once the ball is entered into play the forward(3) runs to the backside to clear out. Once the guard(2) gets the ball, the big(4) is going to continue across and set a screen for the center(5) to cut to the basket. The big(4) should open up to the ball. If the defense gets screened then the center(5) will be open. If the defense stays down around the basket then the big(4) should be open at the free throw line. Either way you are creating a quick high low set with the two post players.
This is a nice set of 4 plays out of the 1-4 high set in a baseline out of bounds scenario. The group of plays give each player a play designed for them as the primary option. The exception is the forward(3) who is passing the ball in for each play. Each team is naturally going to have a player or two who are the primary scorers.
However, you need to have plays designed for every player on the team. There will be games in which one of the non-primary scorers is having a great game and having a play designed to get them a shot can help your team in those games. Having those one or two little wrinkles can be the difference in winning or losing a close game. I hope one of these plays can help you win a game.
