Free Throw Shooting #3-Shoot Until You Miss

This is a free throw shooting game that can be done with 2 or 3 people and 1 basket.  This is a drill that can be used for an entire team and multiple baskets as well.  It is not restricted by how many people or how many baskets there are in a gym.  It is also something that most players have done on their own working on their free shooting.

I am always looking at getting more focus on free shooting during practices because the players can lose focus in a practice when free throws are being done.  I want the players focused on every drill and that includes free throws.  Free throws can be the difference in winning and losing a bunch of close games.  So as a coach how can I get better focus and results on free throws during practice?  This is a game I use to make it competitive amongst the players to help increase their focus.

Here is the game.  I call it shoot until you miss.  Each player will shoot free throws until they miss one.  When they miss the players rotate and another shooter starts.  The player with the most consecutive made free throws is the winner.  The players do not add to their scores.  Every time the players rotate, the shooter starts at 0.  So, a player can make 10 in a row and miss shot 11, they have a score of 10.  When that player rotates around and starts shooting again, they start at 0.  The keep the score of 10 unless they can make 11 or more another time.

I put a time limit on the game like 5 or 10 minutes and the players continue shooting and rotating until time runs out.  I will have either a single winner amongst every player or a winner for each basket the players are using.  If I am using 6 baskets in a gym with players at each basket, then I can have 6 winners for the time limit.

The losers will have a punishment for losing.  It could be a sprint like a down and back run.  Pushups or sit-ups could be used as well for the punishment.  Sometimes I let a player choose the punishment.  If I am doing this multiple times, I will let the winners of the first game choose the punishment for the next game.  This is putting a bigger reward on winning because not only do the players who win do not have to do the punishment, but they also get to choose the punishment for the next round.

This is something I have found that gets the players more invested in making their free throws because they want to win.  They have the added pressure of needing to make each free throw because one good round by a player can win the game.
