Stack plays can be very predictable. When a stack play goes against the standard type of stack plays it can work very well. A stack play is usually designed to get a post player coming down the lane to catch the entry pass. This play has similar movement but changes the scoring option from the big coming down the lane to the big cutting across the lane on the initial movement.
This stack is a normal type stack setup with the big(4) up front, the guard(2) in the 2nd spot, the point(1) 3rd, and the center(5) in the back. A normal stack play would have the guard(2) and big(4) split, the point(1) turn and set a screen for the center(5) to come down the lane.
This play has the big(4) cut across the lane to the block and the guard(2) cut out to the corner. This movement is the same for this play and a normal stack play.
The difference comes with the point(1) cutting out to the wing instead of screening for the center(5). The entry pass is to the guard(2) in the corner who then passes it up to the point(1) on the wing.
The center(5) is going to start down the lane. This movement is going to draw the defenses attention because of the standard stack play where the center(5) cut is the main option of the play. As the center(5) gets to the mid-post, they are going to turn and go screen for the big(4) on the opposite block.
The big(4) is going to cut back to the ball using the screen set by the center(5). The big(4) can cut to the block, mid-post, or the elbow like I have drawn in the diagram. The big(4) is going to read the defense and screen to determine where to make their cut. If the big’s(4) defender is high then cut to the block. If the defender is low then cut to the elbow. If the defender is chasing then use more of a curl cut to the mid-post.
This play works well because every player is going to be on the front side lane line to start. The offense all cuts away from the lane line. The defenders moving with the offense will leave the lane line completely open for any player to cut back into this area. When you add in a big to big screen then makes it hard for the defense to stop the play.
This is a great play with two post players. I find it hard to create plays that utilize two post players especially in how the game is being played today. So, I am always looking for and trying to create some plays using two post players. While you do not need two post players for this play to work, it is a nice play when you have multiple post players in the game at the same time.
