BLOB #20-Triple Screen for Inbounder 3-Point Shot

BLOB #20-Triple Screen for Inbounder 3-Point Shot post thumbnail image

One of the things I like to do as a coach is to have at least one BLOB play for a 3-point shot for every player that can shoot them. I also like to have the same setup as much as possible or every BLOB play. This philosophy has the same player taking the ball out of bounds for every BLOB play. So, how can I setup a BLOB play to get the inbounds passer open for an open 3-point shot?

I like the stack formation to help spring the in-bounds passer open by running away from the basket. In a stack formation, the defense is normally going to pack themselves around the basket. When the defense packs the lane, the ability to get a player open running out to the 3-point line is much easier. When a couple of screens are added, it becomes even easier to get an open 3-point shot.

This is a normal stack formation with the center(5) in the back. The normal stack play will have a player screen for the center(5) coming down the lane. We use that tendency against the defensive team. I want the defense to pack close to the basket and then send a player out away from the basket.

This BLOB play starts with the guard(2) screening for the point(1) going out to the corner or wing. The forward(3) throws the in-bounds to the point(1) in the wing/corner area.

Now the forward(3) runs straight up the lane line using a triple screen by the big(4), guard(2) and center(5). The forward(3) comes up out of the lane off the triple screen wide open. The point(1) throws the ball back to the forward(3) as they get to the 3-point line. The forward(3) will catch and shoot an open 3-point shot.

Conclusion

This is a quick BLOB play. It is simple play to execute. There are not a lot of moving parts so I do not see why any team could not be able to run this play.

This is also a good play to run if the in-bounds defender is playing under the basket. The forward(3) can get space with a hard sprint right after the in-bounds pass. It is also a BLOB play that can be ran against a zone defense. The triple screen will have to adjust to the zone but it should not be difficult to change the play from a man defense to a zone defense.

This BLOB play can be used on its own or in a series of BLOB plays. A team with a few different BLOB plays all using the same starting formation keeps the defense from being able to know what play is going to be happening. A stack formation BLOB series can be a good for a team where each player has a play designed to get them a shot.
