SLOB plays can be used at any point during games. Some of them like SLOB #4 are for a very unique situation. Other plays like this SLOB play can be used no matter what situation the game is in. It can be used as a late quarter or end of game scenario. It can be used at any point during a game to try and catch the defense sleeping and get an open shot.

Coaches should have a handful of SLOB plays ready for every situation that comes up. This SLOB play can be a good one to keep ready because it is versatile on when it is ran during a game.

There are two options that are available when running the play. The defense will decide on which option the offense uses.

The setup of the play is the big(4) and center(5) standing on lane line extended up to the 3-point line or just below. The guard(2) and point(1) are in line with the forward(3) on the backside lane line and the point(1) another couple of steps farther back. The initial setup is spread all the way across the floor to extend the defense as much as possible. Depending on which player is the better 3-point shooter, the guard(2) and point(1) can switch positions.

Option 1

The first option is the guard(2) using the double screen with a curl cut to the basket. By extending the defense across the floor the play setup has the chance for the defense to leave the basket wide open. If the double screen can catch the guard’s(2) defender then that curl cut will be wide open.

The curl cut has the ability to also act as a decoy to open up the 2nd option. When the guard(2) curls around the double screen the defense could react to the curl cut and drop back towards the basket. This helps with option 2.

Option #2

As the guard(2) curls around the double screen, the point(1) is following but using the double screen to get open somewhere around the wing for a 3-point shot. The curl cut could be open with the guard(2) but if it is not then the point(1) could be open as the 2nd player using the double screen.

The curl cut can act as a decoy but it can also be a 3rd screen without screening. If the point’s(1) defender goes under the double screen, then the curl by the guard(2) is going to put both the guard(2) and their defender right at the end of the double screen. With the point(1) defender going under the double screen they are likely to run into either the guard(2) or the guard’s defender trying to keep up with the point(1).

Defenses that go under screens are going to struggle to defend the point(1) coming off of the double screen because of the curl cut coming before the straight cut. The space the defender needs to get under the double screen and come out on the other side is now being occupied by the guard(2) and their defender.

This SLOB play can be run multiple times a game because the defense has to defend two good options every time. And if there is a defensive breakdown then the offense should have either a layup or an open 3-point shot.
