This is a similar BLOB play to what play BLOB #2 did. The difference is the screen the screener action to get a guard and post player screening at the foul line. This play is using guard to post screens to stress the defense. This will hopefully have the defense make a mistake leading to an easy basket.
The players start lined across the free throw line with the post players at the elbows and the guards on the wing foul line extended. The play will work against both a zone and man because the defense is going to have to extend and flatten out to guard the initial setup.
It is a great play against switching defenses. There are 2 guard to post screens creating mismatches with the switching defense.
The point(1) is going to set an in-screen for the big(4). The big is going to run to the corner. If the defense does not switch, then the point(1) defender is going to have to work around the screen. This can help the 2nd screen be more effective.
Now the big(4) is in the corner of the play to help remove a post defender away from the basket. After the point(1) to big(4) screen, the center(5) is coming across the lane to set a screen for the point(1). The hope is the point(1) defender will worry about the in-screen and not be ready to defend the cross screen by the center(5).
After the cross screen, the center(5) is opening up to the ball. If the defense overplays the screen and the point(1), then the center(5) should be open right in front of the ball for an easy pass and layup.
The guard(2) is running up around the 3-point line as a safety release in case none of the other 3 players are open after the screens.
While the big(4) does not have to be a 3-point shooter, it does help the play if this player is able to shoot and make 3-pointers. This makes the defense have to play the first in-screen better so the big(4) does not get an open 3-point shot. With the game of basketball moving to a more wide open game, the big(4) is becoming much more of an outside threat and the play uses that to its advantage.
Good BLOB plays are going to stress the defense and give the offense as many scoring chances as possible. This play has the chance for a good 3-point shot as well as 2 chances for a catch and layup next to the basket. The defense cannot focus on just one player because that will leave another player open for a good scoring opportunity.
When paired with BLOB #2 it starts out the same so the defense will not be able to know what is going to happen before the play begins. I love using the same formation for 3 or 4 plays to really confuse the defense about what is going to happen.
