What is a 2-1-2 Press?
A 2-1-2 Press has two players up putting pressure on the ball. There is a single middle defender who will roam in the middle of the press and decide where and when to go trap the ball. The final two players are back. The 2-1-2 press is normally a 3/4 court press. This puts the front two defenders between the 3-point line and half-court, the middle defender right at half-court and the two back players around the 3-point line.
The 2-1-2 press is a more passive press. The trapping is going to come only from the middle defender. If the middle defender does not see a good spot to trap, then they will not trap. However, if the middle defender does leave the middle to trap, then the other 3 defenders rotate towards the ball to try and get a steal. A trap might only occur in half the possessions in a 2-1-2 trap because it can be difficult to get a trap in this press.
What is a 1-2-2 Press?
The 1-2-2 Press is normally a ¾ court press with the defense in a 1-2-2 setup. One player is the point who will put the initial pressure on the ball as it comes up the floor. Two players will start around the half-court line. These two players are going to be the 2nd player to trap the ball with the point. Or they are going to be covering the middle of the floor. This will depend on the location of the ball.
The last two players will start somewhere around or above the 3-point line. These two players are going to either prevent a sideline pass or be the rim protector. The back two players should not be moving up the court for any reason. The 1-2-2 Press is really about the front 3 players getting up and trapping with having the two back players as protection.
Best Team Personnel for a 2-1-2 Press
The key to running a good 2-1-2 Press is the middle defender. This player must have a high basketball IQ, anticipate well, and be fast. All three of these skills are necessary from the middle defender in order for the 2-1-2 Press to work. No other press relies on a single defender as much as the 2-1-2 press relies on the middle defender.
The middle defender must have a high basketball IQ. They need to understand and know where every player is on the court and why they are there. They have to know where the offense is trying to take the ball and the passes coming out of those areas.
A bad rush by the middle defender leaves the defense down 2 players. If the offense sees the trap before it gets there, then the offense has easy passes out of the trap and the offense is able to attack the back two defenders with numbers.
The middle defender must know exactly when and how to rush the ball to get the trap. Not many players have a high enough basketball IQ to understand and read what everybody is doing and to know the exact moment to rush.
The middle defender must be able to anticipate well. The ability for them to get an extra step or two before anybody else can be the difference between a trap and almost a trap. By reading the game well, the middle defender can anticipate and start to move where the trap is going to be rather than where the ball currently is at. Those 1 or 2 steps can make all the difference for the defense.
Finally, the middle defender must be fast enough to get to the trap when they decide to rush. A slow defender will not cover the distance quick enough to catch the offense unaware. The middle defender must be at the trap faster than the offense is able to see them coming. Basketball is a fast-paced game so having the speed to be at the trap the moment before the ball handler sees it coming is an absolute must.
The middle defender is the key to the 2-1-2 press. They have to be a special kind of player. And simple put, there are not too many high school basketball players that possess all the necessary traits to make this press work. The handful of players that are able to execute in the middle defender’s spot are going to be the best players on the court more often than not.
Best Team Personnel for a 1-2-2 Press
A team with 3 tall guards are the best personnel for the 1-2-2 Press. The back two players are going to stay back and protect the rim. The front 3 guards are tasked with trying to get traps and steals. They are having to cover a lot of floor space. The taller these front 3 players are, the more likely the press is going to work.
Speed can help with the press but size is the biggest indicator of success with the 1-2-2 Press. The 1-2-2 Press uses the advantage of having taller guards to its maximum. Teams with taller guards can struggle at times getting the most benefit of having taller players.
The 1-2-2 Press is a great press to try with taller guards because the passing lanes for the offense is always over or around the taller guards. This can make it harder on opposing guards if they are smaller because of the size difference.
When to Use a 2-1-2 Press
The first thing to have when running the 2-1-2 Press is the middle defender as I stated earlier. After that the 2-1-2 Press can be used at any point in time during a game.
The 2-1-2 press is a more passive press in that it should be used to control tempo rather than trying to get steals and turnovers. It is going to make the offense slow down to break the press. It is going to take the transition game away from the offense. This will turn the game into a half-court game rather than a full-court game.
The middle defender can trap when the time is right but they do not have to ever trap the ball. They can stay in the middle and the defense can do a slow retreat out of the press. The 2-1-2 press can be shown and slowly retreated to make the offense stop their transition and get into a press offense.
Then the defense can retreat back to a half-court defense and force the offense into a half-court game. This is when the 2-1-2 press is being used to its fullest advantage. And with this strategy the middle defender can be anybody because they are not leaving to trap the ball.
When to Use a 1-2-2 Press
The 1-2-2 Press is one of the safer presses to run because it does not extend as aggressively as other presses. The 1-2-2 Press extends and traps much like other more aggressive presses but does not leave the offense any openings on the back end if they break the press. The reward of the press is still there but the amount of risk has been reduced. It is a good press to apply pressure without leaving the defense wide open for the offense to take advantage of the aggressiveness.
The 1-2-2 Press is also a great press to use when a defense has really tall guards. The 1-2-2 Press keeps three guards up front and trapping. This will maximize the size advantage of tall guards. A 1-2-2 Press with 3 tall guards makes it very difficult for the offense to dribble through or pass around the taller guards.
Another time to use the 1-2-2 Press is when a team has multiple post players on the floor at the same time. The 1-2-2 Press leaves two players in the back of the press. These back two players do not have to rotate up and get involved in trapping during the press. This gives the defense the ability to press with a team who has multiple post players. Teams with slower post players can struggle to have a quality press, but with the 1-2-2 Press those teams have a viable pressing option.
Advantages of a 2-1-2 Press Over a 1-2-2 Press
1) Better Ball Pressure
The beauty of the 2-1-2 Press is the uncertainty of the press. The middle defender has no rules in place. The front two defenders are looking to apply as much pressure as they can. And the back two defenders stay back to protect the rim.
The front two defenders are trying to apply as much ball pressure as possible so the middle defender can come up and trap the ball. The front two defenders do not know when or where the trap will occur. Their job is to put pressure on the ball and force the offensive players to worry about them. This lets the middle defender rush and trap the ball without the ball handler seeing them come.
If the two front defenders can not get pressure on the ball, then they can see the trap coming and pass before it gets to them. In order for the 2-1-2 Press to work, the front defenders must apply good sustained ball pressure. Their job is to get the offensive players worried about the ball pressure by putting their head down. As soon as the offensive player’s eyes drop, the middle defender can leave and trap the ball.
The 1-2-2 Press wants ball pressure but wants a controlled ball pressure. The front defender wants to get the ball and keep the ball on a sideline. The front defender will apply pressure to accomplish this. They do not want to apply so much pressure that the ball handler is forced to change direction and go back to the middle of the court.
The 1-2-2 Press will pressure to get the ball to a sideline. Once the ball is on the sideline, the pressure will relax in trying to get the ball into a good trapping position. When the ball enters the trap zone, the defense rushes the ball to get the trap. The 1-2-2 Press applies controlled pressure whereas the 2-1-2 Press is applying all out pressure.
2) Trapping Can Occur Anytime and Anywhere
The reason the 2-1-2 Press can be so good is the same reason why most teams can not run it well. The middle defender is free to move as they please. They have no set rules so they can roam and rush when and where they want.
The other four defenders and even the coach does not know when or even if the middle defender will try and trap. This level of unpredictability can make the 2-1-2 Press hard to play against but also hard to execute well.
The offense can never get into a rhythm because the traps are never going to be in the same spots. There could be a handful of consecutive possessions without a trap ever occurring. Then there could be possessions with a trap happening with each possession. The middle defender can choose when to trap so there is never a set pattern.
The 1-2-2 Press has its trapping areas and will only trap when the ball enters those areas. The defense works to get the offense to put the ball into these areas in order to trap. And the defense will wait to trap until the ball gets into those areas.
But the 1-2-2 Press will also not trap outside of the trapping areas. The offense knows where the trap is going to occur and the defense cannot hide where they are attempting to put the ball in order to trap. Every player and coach knows what is happening with the press. The offense is trying to keep the ball out of the trap zones while the defense is trying to get the offense to go into the trap zones.
3) Keeps Offense Off-Balanced
As an opposing coach, one of the hardest things to prepare for is the unexpected. An opponent coming into a game and doing something different can be difficult to play against.
Scouting is needed to properly plan for each game. But when something is not in the scouting report then a team has not prepared for the new wrinkle. Teams will have to adjust quickly during the game or they could be in a huge mess.
The 2-1-2 Press is similar to the new wrinkles a team may have because it is unpredictable. Each possession can be completely different than the previous possession. The offense is always going to be slightly off-balanced because the 2-1-2 Press is never going to be the same. The offense has to be ready for all different types of situations because the middle defender has the freedom to move freely.
The offense playing against a 2-1-2 Press has to be focused every possession and every second of each possession because the trap can occur anywhere and at any time. The offense is always going to be in an uncomfortable position because the defense is always changing how they are guarding the offense. This gives an advantage to the 2-1-2 Press that other presses can not replicate.
The 1-2-2 Press can disrupt an offense but a good team should eventually figure out how to attack the press. The 1-2-2 Press is set in its movements and trapping so the offense can plan on how to attack to keep them out of trouble.
The offense will know what the defense is trying to do in a 1-2-2 Press. They will know where the traps are going to be set so they can avoid those areas. The defense knows the offense is trying to keep the ball out of the trapping areas. The success or failure of the 1-2-2 Press is whether the defense can make the offense still put the ball into the trapping areas or if the offense
Advantages of a 1-2-2 Press Over a 2-1-2 Press
1) Better Chance to Get a Good Trap
The 1-2-2 Press relies on the point defender to pressure the ball just enough to get it to a sideline so the wing can close the distance and get a good trap. The 1-2-2 Press works similar to the 1-3-1 Press in how and where it is going to trap the offense. The 1-2-2 Press works at getting the ball to the sideline and then coming up and trapping as the offense moves up the sideline.
A good offense can keep the ball in the middle of the court as much as possible but once the ball gets to the sideline the defense should have a good trap. The point and wing defenders have the right angles to converge on the ball when it gets on the sideline for a good trap. The ball handler has no wear to go when the two defenders close in to the ball properly. A good trap will lead to turnovers and easy runout baskets for the defense.
The 2-1-2 Press can struggle on getting good sustained traps. The middle defender is all alone with the freedom to move and trap as they please. While this is a benefit in the offense not knowing when the trap is coming, it is also an obstacle because the defense does not have a set pattern on how to trap.
The middle defender can trap as they wish but the other 4 defenders have to be prepared at all times to trap. If they do not see or feel or hear the middle defender coming, then they could give the ball too much space and not have the ability to get a good trap set.
The 2-1-2 Press is going to miss on chances to trap the ball because of the reliance on the middle defender. The middle defender could misread a play or anticipate incorrectly giving the offense the chance to move up the court without the threat of a trap.
The 2-1-2 Press tries for quality over quantity. There will be less traps with the 2-1-2 Press but the hope is the defense will get a turnover every time the press is able to get a trap. There will be fewer traps by the defense but a higher percentage of traps should result in turnovers.
The 1-2-2 Press will get more traps due to the rotation of the press. The 1-2-2 Press may get a lower percentage of steals out of the traps because the offense and defense know the trap is coming. But the defense is going to take the lower percentage of turnovers because they are getting so many more traps than the 2-1-2 Press.
2) Not Reliant on One Player
The 1-2-2 Press has the front group of 3 playing together and then the back 2 defenders playing together. The front group of 3 are working together to get a good trap. The back 2 defenders are working together to protect the rim and stop any easy baskets by the offense.
Every defender has their job to do. And each defender is working within a smaller group to achieve the best possible results for the press. The two smaller groups are playing together but are separated in what they are doing enough that a breakdown by the front 3 is not going to affect the back 2 and the reverse is also true.
The 1-2-2 Press having this segmented structure makes every defender important to do their job. A breakdown by one group should not affect the other group in what they are doing. This makes every defender important but at the same time reduces the importance of any one defender.
The 2-1-2 Press is the complete opposite. The middle defender is the most important player in the 2-1-2 Press. They are moving without restriction and are free to do as they please. The other 4 defenders have their responsibilities but there also is the job of reacting to what the middle defender is doing.
The other 4 defenders in a 2-1-2 Press have to be ready to react at all times to the middle defender. The middle defender can trap at any time so the other players have to be ready to react with the middle defender to get a good trap. If the 4 defenders do not react with what the middle defender is doing then the press does not work.
The middle defender in the 2-1-2 Press makes the press either good or bad. A bad middle defender will always be out of place giving the offense too many openings to break the press and attack. However, a good middle defender will keep the offense confused giving the defense a big advantage. The 2-1-2 Press relies on the middle defender to make it a good press.
3) Rotations are More Structured
The 1-2-2 Press is structured in a way that everybody on the court knows what they are doing and what every other teammate should be doing. The understanding of what the entire defense is doing reduces confusion for each defender. Every defender has their rotations as the ball moves up the court. The 1-2-2 Press works when every defender is executing their role within the press.
Defense is played best when the defenders are able to just read and react and play fast. Sometimes the more thinking that is done will cause the players to play slow. And confusion on the defenders can freeze them in place because they do not know what they should be doing. The 1-2-2 Press reduces the thinking of the players because they should just react to where the ball is located. This understanding minimizes confusion for everybody as well.
The 2-1-2 Press is a thinking press. The middle defender is free to move where and when they want. The other 4 defenders are reacting to the middle defender and the offense. So, now the defenders not only have to react to the offense but they also have to be on the lookout for their teammate so they do not miss a trapping opportunity.
The freedom of the 2-1-2 Press can make it a challenge for an offense to play against. But that same freedom can be a detriment because the defenders do not have a set rotation. They are reading and reacting with each other just as much as they are moving with the offense.
The 2-1-2 Press can be confusing for players because of the uncertainty. And it can play slow because every defender is having to think about both the offense and the ball as well as where the middle defender is going to be because of where the offense is on the court. This much thinking can really slow the 2-1-2 Press down to a crawl making it ineffective.
Which is Better? A 2-1-2 Press or a 1-2-2 Press
The 2-1-2 Press is a bit of a wildcard. It can be one of the best presses but it could also be one of the worst. The difference between it being a good press or a bad press comes down to the ability of the middle defender to play that spot. A good middle defender will cause havoc and chaos for the offense. A bad middle defender will cause havoc and chaos for the defense.
The 1-2-2 Press is a more traditional press. It has its set rotations and traps. Defenders should get an understanding of how it works and where every defender should be. The 1-2-2 Press uses all 5 defenders to work so no one defender is vital to the overall success of the press.
The other big factor is the transition from the press to the half court. The 1-2-2 Press can easily drop straight back into a 1-2-2 Half Court Zone Defense. The 2-1-2 Press will need the players to abandoned the press and switch into a half court defense at some point. This could be a Man to Man Defense or some other Zone Defense.
This transition from the 2-1-2 Press to a Man Defense or Zone Defense gives the offense a moment every possession to attack while the defenders are changing. This transition could give the offense an easy basket or two every game.
These two main differences are why I would give the edge to the 1-2-2 Press. The 1-2-2 Press can be effective but the problems of the 1-2-2 Press are much less than the 2-1-2 Press. The risk of the 1-2-2 Press is also much less than the 1-2-2 Press. Therefore, I would give the edge to the 1-2-2 Press over the 2-1-2 Press.
However, if a player is able to play that middle defender position well, then it pushes the 2-1-2 Press into one of the top presses for that team. The problem with this is there are very few players I have seen that had the speed, anticipation, and IQ to play this spot.
As an opposing coach to a well run 2-1-2 Press, it was hard to plan for and play against when the opponent had the right player in the spot. When that player was subbed out, then it was an easy press to break and attack. With the right player, the 2-1-2 Press is much better than the 1-2-2 Press but most teams do not have the right player. Therefore the 1-2-2 Press is the better press.
