Trinity Wins Two—Prepares For Rival

The Trinity Wildcats claimed wins Friday and Saturday night to push their regular season record to 17-3. The 79-58 win over Alabama Christian on Friday night gave the cats a 6-0 record to close area play. With the 62-41 win over Catholic the next night Trinity now turns its’ attention to rival Montgomery Academy in a Senior Night contest at home this Saturday.

Marquel Darrington exploded for 24 points against Alabama Christian including a thunderous dunk that ignited a cats run. He also had 5 assists and 7 steals in an excellent performance. Kyle Shaw chipped in 11 while Griffin Littlefield and Wilson Van Hooser had 10 each.

Exceptional defense and strong interior passing by the wildcats’ big men produced a win over the Catholic Knights on Saturday. Again it was Darrington’s acrobatics that ignited a third quarter explosion as he nailed a 3-pointer, sandwiched between two dunks. He tallied 13 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 0 turnovers while big men Andrew Martin and Kyle Shaw had 11 and 10 respectively.

So the 17-3 wildcats will conclude regular season play Saturday night in what is always a hotly contested game against MA and then will host the 4A Area 5 tournament beginning February 8th.

Trinity comes back and wins slow down game

After losing to the Trinity Wildcats three times during the regular season, coach Taylor Hart and the Alabama Christian Eagles had a surprise waiting for the Wildcats in an area semifinal game played in Selma. The surprise was ACA slowed the game down after taking a 3-0 lead. How low scoring was this game? It was 12-7 Eagles with just two minutes remaining in the first half and 20-13 ACA at half. However, in the second half the Wildcats were able to accelerate the scoring pace and they pulled out a 44-37 win.

The backcourt combo of Marquel Darrington and D'Awvalo Turnipseed scored 13 of the Wildcats’ 18 in the fourth quarter. Darrington finished with 13 points and Turnipseed scored all 12 of his points in the second half. Zack Shaw had eight points and William Van Hooser came off the bench and contributed six points.

Trinity finally wins on Montgomery Academy's home court

It had been five years since the Trinity Wildcats had beaten rival Montgomery Academy on its home court. But that streak is over. The Wildcats opened up 10 point leads in both the first and second half and then held on to a 57-55 victory.

Six of the Wildcats' points came on buzzer beater shots. At the end of the first half D'Awvalo Turnipseed banked a shot from past half court, an estimated 42-feet, to give Trinity a seven-point lead at the break. Marquel Darrington, who hit a a 3/4's court shot before the halftime buzzer eight days prior, nailed a 25-footer at the end of the third quarter.

Turnipseed led Trinity with 20 points, Darrington had 13 and Zack Shaw contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with a 17-8 record. Montgomery Academy, ranked fifth in 3A, is 20-5.

Trinity rallies to beat real tall Erwin

The Trinity Wildcats conjured up some fourth quarter magic and outscored 5A Erwin 24-13 in a 52-44 win at Faulkner University. Although Erwin was missing 6-foot-9 sophomore Demarcus Cousins, who has left the team, the Eagles still had plenty of height on their backline, which was in the 6-foot-5 to 6-foot-7 range. Trinity's tallest starter is 6-foot-3 Zack Shaw.

The Wildcats trailed by three points at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Eagles went to a man-to-man press which opened up the court for Marquel Darrington. Darrington scored eight of his 16 points in the final period and he had two magnificent drives to the hoop that resulted in and-ones. Shaw finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and D'Awvalo Turnipseed added 10 points as the Wildcats improved to 16-8.

Wildcats continue their 3rd quarter supremacy in win over Holtville

Shaw led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Darrington had 19.
