November Games
November 30
The Big Game
Missouri 86, Arkansas 64
Mike Anderson made his name coaching at Arkansas, under Nolan Richardson, and in his first real test with his new team, the University of Missouri, his Tigers went on an 18-5 run to take control of a home game against the Razorbacks. The Tigers forced 24 turnovers and held Arkansas to 42% field goal shooting. Anderson's Tigers are 8-0.
|
Missouri (86)
Due to the weather, freezing rain and snow, only 5,428 filled Missouri’s 15,061-seat arena. But it felt like hell, "40 minutes of hell", inside the arena as the Tigers forced 24 turnovers on 17 steals and held Arkansas to 42% field goal shooting.
Tiger coach Mike Anderson told the Columbia Daily Tribune, “With the way we play, we like to play not 100 miles an hour, probably about 200 miles an hour. For periods there, that’s what you saw.” Box Score |
Arkansas (64)
The taller Razorbacks outrebounded the Tigers by only one, 36-35 and Arkansas made only 15-of-25 free throws.
Arkansas coach Stan Heath said in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "We got out-worked, we got out-hustled. We ran into an ambush tonight. I thought the strength of our team tonight would be the rebounding department. They did a great job. They kept us off the glass, and they balanced that from us."

November 29 College Games
The Big Game
North Carolina 98, Ohio State 89
It was a fine game, but it would have been, perhaps, even a more memorable clash if Ohio State's Greg Oden had played. Carolina's big guy Tyler Hansbrough scored 21 with 14 rebounds and he started and ended a decisive 17-2 second half run that energized the Chapel Hill crowd and quickly disolved the Buckeyes four point halftime lead. Maybe one of these days we will get to see an Oden versus Hansbrough matchup. The ACC wins the Big East/ACC challenge 8 to 3.
|
North Carolina (98)
Carolina allowed 13 3-pointers and Ohio State made 8 of 13 in the first half, but the Heels shot 65% FG in the second half.
Freshman Wayne Ellington scored 19 and he was impressed with the home court atmosphere. The rookie told the Fayetteville Observer,
“This place was shaking. You could feel the vibrations as you ran up the court. It was crazy. I think that helped us lose ourselves in the game and become selfless and show how explosive we can be.” Box Score |
Ohio State (89)
Were free throws the difference in the game? Ohio State was whistled for 23 fouls, while Carolina had 13 and the Tar Heels made 22 of 34 free throws, Ohio State eight of 13.
Buckeye coach Thad Matta was also impressed with the basketball atmosphere in Chapel Hill as expressed in this quote in the Columbus Dispatch,
"I thought one team would hit 100 points, and I was hoping it was going to be us. That to me is college basketball right there, that environment, the plays that were made, the blocked shots, the hustle, the tipped passes. That was exciting." |

The Big Game
Duke 54, Indiana 51
No that wasn't the halftime score, but that was actually the final at Cameron Indoor. That '54' was the fewest points scored by the Blue Devils in a win since they beat Georgia Tech 47-44 on Feb. 3, 1982. That was Mike Krzyzewski's second season in Durham and that was before there was a shot clock in college basketball. Duke has never lost a Big 10/ACC Challenge game.
|
Duke (54)
DeMarcus Nelson made 5 of 7 shots in the first half, while the rest of the Blue Devils hit just 5 of 19. Nelson at one point scored 13 straight for Duke in the first half as the Blue Devils opened up a 33-21 lead at the break. The Hoosiers pulled to within two points in the second half.
Nelson, who scored 19, said in the Durham Sun, "But as the lead got closer, I think we might have put a little bit too much pressure offensively on ourselves. We just have to get better. We have to work and improve on offense." Box Score
|
Indiana (51)
Indiana starters were a combinesd14 of 39 (36%) from the field against Duke. The Hoosiers scored 30 of their 51 points in the paint.
Coach Kelvin Sampson told the Indianapolis Star , "We're disappointed we lost obviously. If you put yourself in a position to win at Duke, you'd like to close the deal. But I'm certainly not disappointed in our effort." | Click for game story Click here for games played earlier this month

Dominic James, who scored 22 points, hit one with 37 seconds remaining to put Marquette up 62-59, but then 16 seconds later Jarryd Loyd tied the game with a Valpo 3-pointer. Dominic James scored the Golden Eagles’ last 18 points over the final 6 minutes 23 seconds and he said in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "I didn't have a great first half; things weren't going my way but my teammates stuck with me. When you've got teammates around you that give you that kind of praise and that kind of confidence, it's easy to go out there and make plays. And that's what I did." Box Score |

For those in the eastern time zone, a game that starts after 11 p.m. and goes to overtime is a tough game to stay with, no matter how good it was. And it was good. No great. November 22 College Games
The Big Game
Gonzaga 82, North Carolina 74
Despite a big time Tarheel run that cut the Bulldogs lead from 15 down to 2 with four minutes to play, Gonzaga knocked off the Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News cover boys from North Carolina.
|
Gonzaga (82)
With the second ranked Tarheels in their best comeback mode, somebody from Gonzaga had to take the role of Adam Morrison and it was Jeremy Pargo. Pargo, a 6-foot-2, 219 pound sophomore, hit a three, an acrobatic drive to the hoop, assisted on an inside bucket and drew a charge. Morrison, were he still a Zag, would probably be capable of doing only two of those four roundball acts. Last season as a freshman, Pargo averaged only 2 points and shot a measily 28% from the field and 23% outside the arc. Last night Pargo scored 16 and hit 6-of-11 shots. Pargo told the Spokesman Review,
“The opportunity presented itself to get to the basket and lay it in, so I took advantage of it. A lot of people doubt the play of Gonzaga now that Adam (Morrison) is gone, and we’ve just been preparing for a moment like this.” Box score |
North Carolina (74)
Tyler Hansbrough was the cover boy on both Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News' college basketball preview issues. In his first three games of the season, Hansbrough had averaged 22.3 points and 12 shots a game. His shooting percentage was 65%. But against the Gonzaga his numbers were quite different. Nine points on 2-of-5 shooting. UNC coach Roy Williams commented on Hansbrough's lack of offense in the News Observer,
"We did a very poor job of getting him the basketball and he did maybe the least effective job he's done of moving without the basketball."
