Texas 76 (16-5 overall) (6-1 Big-12)
Texas 6-foot-9 freshman Kevin Durant had a double-double by halftime, 13 points and 11 rebounds and in the second half his rebounding total continued to match his points. Halfway through the second half, he had 21 points and 20 rebounds. But in the final five minutes his scoring abilities took over as he hit his fifth 3-pointer, hit a low post shot in the lane, banked in a 14-footer, swished a 19-footer and slammed on in for his 37th and final point to go with his 23 rebounds .
Durant has been at his best in Big-12 games. He has scored no fewer than 26 points and has hit 37 three times. He is averaging 33.3 points and 14 rebounds in conference games and he has been in single digits in rebounding just once, when he collected but nine against Colorado.
His coach Rick Barnes is running out of ways to praise his rookie phenom. This is what he said in the Dallas Morning News about his performance in Lubbock,
“You saw the best player in college basketball give what I think was the best performance of the year. That's why we won in this building."
What did Durant say? They sounded like the words of a perfectionist,
"It wasn't a perfect game. I could have played better."
Yes, he did miss 14 shots (15-29 FG) and four 3-balls (5-9) and three free throws (2-5) and he did have three turnovers. Box Score |
Texas Tech 64 (15-7 overall) (4-3 Big-12)
The match-up was never Bob Knight versus Kevin Durant. Instead it was 6-foot-9 Darryl Dora and 6-foot-5 Martin Zeno who tried to hold Durant below his season averages of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Unfortunately, for the Raiders, he had passed both of those numbers with 7:35 remaining in the game. Durant appears to be one of those players, who when he is hot, can’t be guarded. One possession he is shooting a left baseline 3-pointer and then the next he is working on you in the lane. Who is long enough and quick enough to deal with him? If you try to beat him up down low, he takes his game outside. You put a little quick guy on him and he takes you down low. How many players have scored 37 on a Bob Knight team and on Knight's home floor? Does anybody know? I have been searching for the answer. Perhaps only Knight knows the answer to this one. Unless you do and if you do please email me.
This is what Knight said about Durant in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal,
“He's really good. The guy is 6-9. He's mobile. He's quick. He's fast. I mean, what more does he have to do? There's no secret. There's no secret thing that he drinks before the game or that they rub on his (tail) before the game that makes him that good. The guy is a great athlete that can really play basketball." |

Stanford 75 (14-5 overall) (6-3 in the Pac-10)
After shooting 30% from the field in the first half, The Stanford Cardinal trailed UCLA 37-25 at half. So what happened? This Cardinal got hot. Stanford hit 3-of-4 field goal attempts to start the second half. But the real push to victory didn’t begin until the 14:13 mark, when he Cardinal was down by 10.
Anthony Goods, who scored 17 of his 20 in the second half, hit a free throw and a jumper and it was show time. Lawrence Hill, who scored 22 was very hot hitting 8-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 on 3-pointers. Hill nailed a jumper to tie the game and then banked in a 3-ball to put the Cardinal up for good. In eight minutes, against a tough defensive team, Stanford went from 10-down to eight up. In their last three wins, Stanford has had long runs in the second half in each. Against USC they went on a 12-0 run and at Oregon State they had an 18-1 run.
Hill, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, has become the Cardinal’s leading scorer. He is averaging 16 points and is shooting 55% from the field and 41% outside the arc. He has led the team in scoring in 10 of 19 games and he has hit 14 of his last 20 field goal attempts in the last two games. Hill said, in the San Francisco Chronicle, that he was in a zone,
"I made some shots I didn't think were going in." Box Score |
UCLA 68 (18-2 overall) (8-2 in the Pac-10)
The Bruins, under coach Ben Howland, have the reputation of being a top flight defensive team. This season they aren’t bad, however, they aren’t even the best Division I defensive club in their hometown. Tim Floyd’s USC Trojans hold opponents to 35% shooting, tops in the Pac-1O. Teams shot 43% against the Bruins. Both teams yield around 60 points. Last season the Bruins, in their run to the championship game, were a better defensive team, statistically, then they are this season. They yielded 59 points and allowed teams to shoot 41.5% in 2005-06.
Here is a strange coincidence in the Bruins two losses this season. Both winning teams, Oregon and Stanford, shot 70% from the field in one half against the Bruins. The Ducks did it in the first half hitting 14-of-20 shots and the Cardinal did it in the second half hitting, of course, 14-of-20 shots. And both teams missed just one 3-point shot. Oregon was 2-for-3 and Stanford 3-for-4. And the coincidences don’t end. Both opponents shot 30% in the other half and made three 3-pointers.
Arron Afflalo, who scored 17 of his 22 in the first half against Stanford, talked about the Bruins’ lack of a killer instinct in the Los Angeles Times,
“We have to be a little more mature in how we close teams out. You have to have a killer instinct. We recognize that every time we step on the floor, it's a big game for the opposing team and they're going to compete for 40 minutes. Not that we didn't compete tonight, but we didn't play at the level we needed to close them out when we had the chance."
